 This story was originally the fifth chapter of the novel Les autels de la peur, published in the newspaper Journal des Débats of 12 March 1884. It reappeared embedded in the story Le petit soldat de plomb, published in the newspaper Le Temps of 1 January 1890 and collected in L’étui de nacre in 1892. In the 1922 revised edition of L’étui de nacre, Anatole France extracted it from Le petit soldat de plomb and placed it directly before the revised version of the latter under the title La perquisition, marking its first appearance as a standalone short story.
